KLCFDC'S ENVIRO~NITIATIVE PROGRAM

WHAT YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE ENVIRO~NITIATIVE PROGRAM, OPPORTUNITIES, CATAGORIES, QUALIFIERS, AND MORE...

  1. The ENVIRO~NITIATIVE, will recognize, assess and reward ideas, practices, product developments,  new technologies and potentially other activities that will provide opportunities for business, individuals, organizations and ultimately, the entire City of Kawartha Lakes to provide tangible benefits to our environment by engagement in this activity.

    EXAMPLES:

    • A family could have instituted a practice in their home whereby they are saving hundreds of gallons of water every month, or are recycling products outside of the standard/ available methods that saves energy or reduces the carbon footprint they make.

    • A business may have come up with a way of handling or recycling packaging material that one of the goods they sell is wrapped in that until just recently went to landfill.  Or it could also be a new product using a natural or "green material" or saving or reducing their energy consumption/ or mitigating the use of a non-renewable resource.

    • There is also the possibility of rewarding the development of a new product or technology-potentially one that could be commercialized but again represents something that can deliver a benefit to our local environment.

  2. Key in the submissions forwarded is that there is an effective and consistent method of measuring the benefit or the impact of the ENVIRO~NITIATIVE.  This could range from the size in the reduction of the number of tonnes going to landfill; the gallons of water, fuel, waste to be saved or eliminated; the kilowatts being used or possibly the non-renewable resource being consumed-or something else. Regardless of the process, the measurement must be consistent and must be both substantiated and sustainable.

  3. Submissions for the ‘Kawartha Lakes’ ENVIRO~NITIATIVE will be accepted anytime after 9:00 a.m., Thursday, August 19th until Noon,Thursday, March 31st 2011.  There is no limit to the number of ideas that can be submitted but it is important that if you are updating or revising your submission that this is clearly shown on the Submission Form as an "Update".

  4. Any other changes in criteria should also be highlighted and if you are altering your idea to the extent that your measurements-the basic outline of what is needed is described in Point # 2 above, are changing significantly. The judges reserve the right to enter your updated idea as a new submission. If this does occur you will be notified. In addition, if upon further review it is established that indeed the idea, product or technology is not truly new-at least in terms of its uniqueness as a way to save, conserve, reuse, recycle or even in reviewing the ENVIRO~NITIATIVE from a product development or technological standpoint, the submission will be returned and it will not be considered for a cash prize.  If however, the idea-while not new-is indeed viewed to be one that could help the City of Kawartha Lakes and/ or its residents/ visitors in supporting and preserving our environment, the idea will still be shared to the community and recognition for the discovery of the idea will be provided.

  5. There is $10,000 in prize money available, divided equally into two separate streams-businesses and organizations and then individual submissions. Individual submissions can include a non-registered student group and or a single family but not a family-run or home-based business. The businesses and organization stream includes all other submissions-regardless of size-as well as not-for-profit, schools and non-government agencies. Government agencies and their employees and immediate family are not eligible.  A business or individual idea may not be entered if there is evidence that idea has already been engaged-be it the development of a product, program or service relatable to the ENVIRO~NITIATIVE, or if the activity has applied or is receiving any kind of support-private or public, relating to its general operations or a specific activity that could easily be viewed as applicable/ eligible for consideration under the other conditions of the ENVIRO~NITIATIVE program.

  6. A judging committee will be established to review all submissions. This may include an initial screening of entries received that will help establish both the validity of the ENVIRO~NITIATIVE as well as to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method(s) of measurement.  Representatives from the committee or the Kawartha Lakes CFDC (KLCFDC) may contact the provider(s) of the submission to establish further details, seek clarification of some points or to simply review any and all elements within the submission relative to the program.  The members of this committee will not be identified specifically but are likely to include representatives from key sponsoring organizations, as well as groups, individuals or local businesses and corporations-including the City of Kawartha Lakes and the KLCFDC.

  7. In the case of a new product or technology, it is clearly understood that elements of confidentiality-even secrecy-may be required.  Every possible step to insure the confidentiality of any submission will be undertaken, however, the organizers, sponsors and their respective agencies and families will not be held accountable for any discovery of information that could occur-unless gross negligence or breach of confidentiality is discovered, documented and proven.

  8. There may be further additions to this listing-as well as revisions and updates-and any submission will need to be sure to adhere to all. These adjustments may happen very quickly and all those who do apply to the ENVIRO~NITIATIVE are responsible to not only understand this-and the changes that may have been made but indeed, also agree to them in writing. It is also the responsibility of those named in the submission to provide all additional information in a timely manner and to periodically check the web site for any and all program changes.
